What is electrolysis?
Electrologists are highly trained professionals who permanently remove unwanted hair using electrolysis. During treatment, a sterile, single-use filament is gently inserted into the natural opening of each hair follicle. A carefully controlled electrical current is then delivered to permanently destroy the follicle’s ability to produce another hair, allowing the treated hair to be removed without force.
What is a “Modality”?
Each modality works differently, allowing the electrologist to customize treatment based on the patient’s hair type, skin characteristics, treatment goals, and medical needs.
Galvanic Electrolysis
A current is used to produce a chemical reaction within the hair follicle, eliminating the hair growth cells.
Thermolysis (Short-Wave)
This modality heats and destroys the hair growth cells in the follicle. A higher intensity current can be applied for less time in the follicle, or the current can be used at a lower intensity with longer timing.
The Blend
The blend method combines galvanic current with thermolysis current. Thermolysis heats up the chemical reaction in the follicle, destroying the hair growth cells.
How many treatments will I need?
Depending on the area you want cleared, it could be a few minutes for a follow-up appointment to an hour for a larger area. Most people who follow the recommended treatment plan can expect to be completed or nearly completed within 18 months. Factors such as hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods, heredity, hormone function, certain medications and stress influence the treatment program for each individual.
What preparation is needed before a visit?
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin
- Avoid shaving, waxing, or tweezing for at least 3–5 days (we need visible hair) (you will need to stop all forms of hair removal besides shaving once treatments begin)
- Stay hydrated and moisturized in the days leading up to your appointment
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and heavy exercise before your session (they can increase sensitivity)
- Inform us of any medications or medical conditions that have changed since your original consultation.

Can electrolysis treat all hair types and skin tones?
Because the treatment targets the follicle rather than the hair’s pigment, electrolysis is effective on every hair color—including blonde, red, gray, and white—and every skin tone, making it the only permanent hair removal method suitable for all patients.
What can I expect after treatment?
Immediately following treatment, you may experience slight redness or tenderness which usually disappears in a couple of hours. There is very little risk of complication or serious skin irritation with electrolysis performed by a skilled practitioner. For the first 24 hours following treatment, it’s best to avoid activity that could irritate hair follicles such as excessive sweating, tanning and prolonged sun exposure or make-up application.
Does electrolysis hurt?
You’ll probably feel a momentary heat sensation or pinch. Some have described Galvanic as a blooming sensation they find more comfortable. Discomfort is minimal for most people, but individual tolerances vary. Keep in mind that some areas of the body are much less sensitive than others. Many people read, listen to music or even take a nap while being treated. I have squishy cubes and silicone balls that vary in firmness that some find relaxing. Bring whatever makes you feel most at ease. I enjoy wearing a sleep mask!
Can hairs be removed from moles?
Electrolysis can be performed on most moles where licensing regulations allow it. Your electrologist WILL require written approval from your physician.
